Clay tile is the older Southern California tradition: the deep terra-cotta color you see on Spanish-style homes throughout Long Beach, Pasadena, and Palos Verdes. It is heavier, more fragile when walked on, and longer-lasting in many cases. Concrete tile is more common on post-1970s homes, comes in a wider color range, and is more cost-effective.
